Which numbers should I check for my business videos?
Once a month, open YouTube Studio, then Analytics, and check views, watch time, average view duration and impressions click-through rate for each video. On your website, Google Analytics enhanced measurement can record when visitors start, progress through and finish embedded YouTube videos. Make more of what people watch to the end.
The short version
- Check monthly, not daily. Video numbers swing a lot from week to week.
- In YouTube Studio: Analytics for the channel, or Content, then a video’s Analytics for one video.
- The useful four: views, watch time, average view duration and impressions click-through rate.
- On your website, Google Analytics can log video starts, progress and completions for YouTube embeds.
- The real test is calls and form fills from the pages with video, not views.
How do I find my YouTube numbers?
YouTube’s analytics page gives two ways in:
- The whole channel: sign in to YouTube Studio and select Analytics in the left menu.
- One video: go to Content, hover over the video and select Analytics.
Channel analytics has tabs for Overview, Content, Audience and Trends. A single video has Overview, Reach, Engagement and Audience. Revenue tabs appear only for channels that earn money.
The four numbers that matter
| Number | Where | What it tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Views | Overview and Reach | How many times it was watched. A rough measure of interest. |
| Impressions click-through rate | Reach | Of the people shown your thumbnail on YouTube, how many clicked. Low means the title or thumbnail isn’t working. |
| Average view duration | Engagement | How long people watched, on average. Low means they left early. |
| Watch time | Engagement | Total time watched. Grows with both views and how long people stay. |
Look at average view duration compared with the video’s length. If people leave in the first seconds, the start needs work: put the answer first, as our guide to which videos to make first suggests.
For Shorts, YouTube’s Shorts page says it changed how Shorts views are counted starting March 31, 2025. Compare Shorts with each other, not with older numbers or with your longer videos.
How do I track video plays on my website?
Views on YouTube include people watching on YouTube itself. To know whether visitors to your website press play, use Google Analytics.
Google’s enhanced measurement page says Analytics can record three events for embedded YouTube videos that have JavaScript API support turned on: video_start when it starts, video_progress when it passes 10%, 25%, 50% and 75% of its length, and video_complete when it ends. To check it’s on:
- In Google Analytics, go to Admin.
- Under Data collection and modification, open Data streams and select your website’s stream.
- Under Enhanced measurement, make sure the toggle is on. Use the settings icon to check video engagement is included.
You need Editor access or higher. The embed also needs the enablejsapi setting, which YouTube’s player parameters page describes. Whoever built your site can confirm it’s set. Vimeo and self-hosted videos aren’t covered by this feature.
YouTube’s embed page adds a detail: autoplayed embeds don’t count as YouTube views.

Which number tells me a video is working for the business?
None of the video numbers on its own. A video’s job on your website is to help someone decide to call, book or buy. So compare the page with the video before and after you added it:
- Calls and form submissions from that page. Our answer on tracking calls and forms explains how.
- Time on the page and how many visitors go on to your contact page.
- What customers say: “I watched your video” on a call is worth noting.
For video you share on social media, add a tracking tag (UTM) to the link back to your site so you can see visits it brings. Our social media guide on measuring with insights and UTMs shows how.
What are the common mistakes?
- Checking every day. Small numbers jump around. Monthly shows the trend.
- Comparing a Short with a ten-minute video. They’re different formats with different viewers.
- Chasing views. A how-to video seen by a few local homeowners who need the job done can be worth more than a viral clip seen by people who’ll never hire you.
- Ignoring the first seconds. If most viewers leave early, fix the opening before making more.
- Assuming the website tracks videos. Check enhanced measurement and the embed setting first.
What if the numbers look wrong?
- No video events in Google Analytics. Check enhanced measurement is on and the embed has
enablejsapi=1. Facade embeds may only report once the real player loads. - YouTube shows almost no impressions. New channels take time. Share the video on your site, in your email newsletter and on social media.
- A video never appears in Google. That’s indexing, not analytics; see video schema and Search Console’s Video indexing report.
How much does it cost, and how long does it take?
YouTube Analytics and Google Analytics are free. A monthly check of a handful of videos takes about 15 minutes. Setting up website video tracking takes minutes if your site already uses Google Analytics.
How does E-3 handle this?
Setting up and checking analytics on client sites, video plays included, falls under our SEO and AI search service. Bigger site changes are tested on a staging copy first.
