What do Direct, Unassigned and AI Assistant mean in GA4?

GA4 sorts every visit into a channel using Google's rules. Direct means GA4 couldn't see where the visitor came from. Unassigned means the source didn't match any rule, often because of a mistyped UTM tag. AI Assistant, added May 13, 2026, groups visits from chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude.

The short version

  • Open Reports, then Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition to see visits by channel.
  • Direct means GA4 couldn’t tell where the visit came from, not that someone typed your address.
  • Unassigned means the source didn’t fit any of Google’s rules. It’s usually a tagging problem.
  • AI Assistant counts visits from chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude, since May 13, 2026.
  • You can’t change the default rules, but tidy UTM tags fix most of the confusion.

How do I see my channels?

  1. In Google Analytics, select Reports.
  2. Open Acquisition, then Traffic acquisition.
  3. The table groups sessions by Session primary channel group.
  4. Add your key events column to see which channels bring leads, not just visits. See setting up key events.

Our help article on seeing how many people visit covers the basic clicks, and our answer on what to check in GA4 each month explains how to use the report.

What does each channel mean?

These are Google’s default channel group rules, simplified. The ones most small businesses see:

ChannelWhat lands here
Organic SearchUnpaid visits from Google, Bing and other search engines
Paid SearchSearch ads, such as Google Ads
DirectNo known source: typed addresses, bookmarks, and links GA4 couldn’t trace
ReferralLinks from other websites
Organic SocialUnpaid visits from Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and other social sites
Paid SocialSocial media ads
EmailLinks tagged with an email medium, such as utm_medium=email
AI AssistantVisits from AI chatbots
UnassignedAnything that matches no rule

There are others, such as Display, Affiliates, Organic Video, SMS and Audio, for businesses that use those channels.

What does Direct really mean?

Direct is GA4’s word for “unknown.” Google’s rule is a source of “(direct)” with no medium. Some of it really is people typing your address. A lot of it isn’t:

  • links in emails sent from Outlook or Gmail apps without UTM tags;
  • links in PDFs, text messages and chat apps;
  • QR codes on printed flyers;
  • links from some secure sites that don’t pass the referring address.

Google’s tagging page adds technical causes, such as a tag that loads late or settings that break the link between pages of the same visit.

To shrink Direct, tag the links you control with UTM parameters. Our guide to measuring social media with insights and UTM links shows how to build them, and the same rules work for emails, flyers and QR codes.

What does Unassigned mean?

Google says Unassigned is used “when there are no other channel rules that match the event data.” The usual small-business causes:

  • A made-up medium. utm_medium=newsletter doesn’t match a rule, but utm_medium=email does.
  • A medium that’s close but wrong. utm_medium=Facebook isn’t a social medium. Use utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social.
  • Missing session information, often from tag setup problems, which shows as “(not set).”

Google’s UTM page says to always include utm_source, utm_medium and utm_campaign. Matching your medium to Google’s list fixes most Unassigned traffic.

Where do ChatGPT and Gemini visits show up?

Google’s release notes say that from May 13, 2026, visits from chatbots such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude appear under AI Assistant in the default channel group reports. Google’s channel rules put a visit there when the referrer matches a listed AI assistant, or when the medium is ai-assistant.

Before that date, the same visits generally showed as Referral, or as Direct when the chatbot passed no referring address. If you compare with older months, allow for that shift.

AI Assistant visits are people clicking a link in a chatbot’s answer. Clicks from Google’s own AI Overviews and AI Mode come from Google Search, so they would normally count as Organic Search. Search Console reports those separately; see how Search Console shows AI features.

Why does this matter?

Channels tell you where to spend time and money. If most leads come from Organic Search, your website content and Google Business Profile matter most. If a newsletter brings real enquiries, keep sending it. But the picture is only as good as the tagging, which is why big Direct and Unassigned numbers are worth fixing.

What are the common mistakes?

  • Reading Direct as loyal customers typing your address. Much of it is untagged links.
  • Inventing UTM mediums. Stick to Google’s terms: email, social, cpc, referral, display, affiliate.
  • Mixed capitals. Facebook and facebook show as different sources. Use lowercase.
  • Tagging internal links. UTM tags on links within your own site overwrite the real source of the visit. Only tag links that point to your site from elsewhere.
  • Comparing AI Assistant with months before it existed.

What if a channel looks wrong?

  • Organic Search dropped: check Search Console first. See the Performance report guide and our answer on why traffic drops.
  • Direct jumped: look for a newsletter, QR code or text campaign sent without tags. Also check the tag still loads first on every page.
  • Lots of Referral from strange sites: these are often spam. Hostname filters, added in September 2026, can limit data to your own domains.
  • Your own site shows as a referral: usually a payment or booking page on another domain. Your developer may need to set up cross-domain measurement.

How much does it cost, and how long does it take?

The report is free. Reading it takes five minutes. Fixing your UTM habits takes an hour to set up a simple naming list, then seconds per link.

How does E-3 handle this?

When we report on a client’s site through our SEO and AI search service, channels are explained in plain words, including when untagged links may be hiding where leads came from.
