Why Bing Webmaster Tools matters for AI answers
Microsoft says Copilot grounds many answers in web search results, and Bing's guidelines now cover Copilot citations. Bing Webmaster Tools is free: import your site from Google Search Console, submit your sitemap, check indexing, and use its AI Performance report to see how often Copilot and Bing's AI summaries cite your pages.
The short version
- Copilot answers many questions from web search results, with linked citations.
- Bing Webmaster Tools is Bing’s free version of Google Search Console.
- The fastest setup is importing your verified sites from Google Search Console.
- Its AI Performance report, in public preview since February 2026, counts citations in Copilot and Bing’s AI summaries.
- It’s also where you submit a sitemap and check that Bing can crawl you.
How do I set it up?
- Sign in at bing.com/webmasters with one of the sign-in options offered. Use an account the business controls, not a staff member’s personal one.
- Add your site. On the My Sites page, choose Import to bring in sites you’ve already verified in Google Search Console. Bing’s import announcement says this verifies them without repeating the work. You can also add the site by hand. Enter the address, then prove you own it with a file, a meta tag or a DNS record.
- Submit your sitemap, usually yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml or the address your SEO plugin gives you. See what an XML sitemap is.
- Check indexing. Look at which pages Bing has indexed and any crawl errors. If important pages are missing, check that robots.txt isn’t blocking bingbot (see AI crawler rules).
- Open AI Performance once data appears, and note which pages are cited.
- Claim your Bing Places listing if you have a physical location or service area, so Bing’s business details match your site. Bing’s help pages describe Bing Places for Business as the way to claim and update a listing, available in limited markets. Our guide to claiming your Bing Places listing has the steps.
If you lose access to Google Search Console later, Bing says you’ll need to reconnect or verify the site another way.
Why does Bing matter now?
Microsoft’s Copilot transparency note says that “for certain conversations where users seek information, Copilot is grounded in web search results.” Links to the sources sit below the answer. Bing is Microsoft’s search engine. In early 2026, Microsoft updated the Bing Webmaster Guidelines to cover how pages get cited in Copilot, as Search Engine Journal reported. The same update says this work can’t guarantee a citation, just as SEO can’t guarantee a rank.
So if Bing hasn’t indexed your site, or has an old version of it, you’re starting behind in every Microsoft answer.
What the AI Performance report shows
Bing’s February 10, 2026 announcement says the report covers content shown “across Microsoft Copilot, AI-generated summaries in Bing, and select partner integrations.” It lists:
- Total citations: how many times your content was shown as a source in AI answers.
- Average cited pages: the daily average of your unique pages cited.
- Grounding queries: key phrases the AI used to retrieve your content. Bing says this is a sample.
- Page-level citation activity and trends over time.
The post doesn’t mention clicks. Treat it as a count of times you were shown, not a traffic report. Bing has added more views since, and the report is still labeled a preview, so labels may change.
IndexNow
IndexNow lets a site tell search engines right away when a page is added, changed or removed. The IndexNow FAQ lists Bing as one of the engines that use it. It also says sending a URL “does not guarantee immediate indexing.” Many WordPress SEO plugins include it. It’s useful when you update hours or services and want Bing to notice sooner.
What do people get wrong?
- Skipping Bing because “nobody uses it.” The search box isn’t the point. Bing’s index is what Copilot’s web answers are built on.
- Verifying with a personal account that leaves with an employee.
- Reading citations as customers. A citation means your page was shown as a source. It doesn’t tell you anyone clicked.
- Blocking bingbot in a security plugin or CDN, then wondering why Bing has nothing.
- Chasing grounding queries by writing a page for every phrase. Bing’s updated guidelines treat language engineered to trigger citations as a form of keyword stuffing.
What if my site isn’t showing in Bing?
- No pages indexed: check robots.txt and any firewall bot settings, then submit the sitemap again.
- Old content showing: send the changed pages through URL submission or IndexNow. Check the old page isn’t still live somewhere.
- No AI Performance data: small sites may see little or nothing at first. The report only shows citations that happened.
- Wrong business details: fix your website first, then your Bing Places listing.
How much does it cost, and how long does it take?
Bing Webmaster Tools and Bing Places are free. Importing from Search Console takes a few minutes. Indexing changes can take days, and AI Performance data builds up over time.
How does E-3 handle this?
For clients on our SEO and AI search service, we can set up Bing Webmaster Tools next to Search Console. Accounts we set up are in the business’s name, with E-3 added as a user. Then we can add Bing’s AI numbers to what we watch and explain them before suggesting changes.
