TikTok for a small business: account types and setup

TikTok now offers a Verified Business Account for anyone whose main goal is promoting a business. Switch in the app under Settings and privacy, Account, then Business verification, and submit business documents. You get a website link, analytics and the Commercial Music Library, but lose the general music library. Only commit if you can film regularly.

The short version

  • TikTok has three account types: General (personal), Verified Business, and Organization.
  • TikTok says anyone whose main goal is promoting a business should use a Verified Business Account.
  • Switch in the app: Profile, Menu, Settings and privacy, Account, Business verification.
  • Verification needs business documents and may take up to 5 business days.
  • Business accounts can use only the Commercial Music Library, not the general music library.

What has changed?

Older guides say you can switch to a “Business Account” with two taps. As of October 31, 2026, TikTok’s account types page describes a Verified Business Account instead. TikTok says it may ask you to verify your business to keep business features, and that an unverified business account may be converted to a General TikTok Account automatically. TikTok also notes that verifying your business is a separate process from getting a verified badge.

Which account type do I need?

Account typeWho it’s for, per TikTokKey points
General TikTok AccountMost people, creators and public figuresGeneral music library and Commercial Music Library; website link on profile only with at least 1,000 followers
Verified Business AccountAnyone whose primary goal is to promote a businessCommercial Music Library only; Business Suite with analytics and leads; website link on profile
Organization AccountBrands managed by several team membersCreated from certain business platforms such as TikTok Shop Seller Center; not available everywhere

For most small businesses, the Verified Business Account is the right choice. If you also want to post personal content, TikTok recommends two separate accounts.

How do I switch to a Verified Business Account?

These steps come from TikTok’s account types page.

  1. In the TikTok app, tap Profile at the bottom.
  2. Tap the Menu button at the top, then select Settings and privacy.
  3. Tap Account.
  4. Tap Business verification, then follow the steps to switch your account type.
  5. Submit your business information and documents when asked.

TikTok says the documents needed vary by location. When verification is done, you get an in-app notification and an email, and it may take up to 5 business days.

Expected result: your account shows business tools, including the Business Suite with analytics.

Before you switch

  • Set up the account with a business email that the business controls.
  • Have your documents ready, in the business’s legal name.
  • Don’t switch back and forth. TikTok warns that your verification isn’t saved if you go back to a General account, and you’d need to verify again.

What do I get, and what do I lose?

You get:

  • A website link on your profile, without needing 1,000 followers.
  • Business Suite, with your analytics dashboard and a leads manager, in the app or on a web browser.
  • Promote, TikTok’s tool for paying to show your videos to more people or send them to your website.
  • Creative Hub, for ideas and trending content.

You lose:

  • The general music library. TikTok says business and organization accounts can’t use it, because those songs “aren’t cleared for commercial use.” You can use the Commercial Music Library, which TikTok says is pre-cleared for commercial use. Original sound, like your own voice, is usually the safest choice, but only if you have the rights to everything in the recording. Background music from a radio or speaker, or someone else’s voice or private conversation, can still cause a problem, so record somewhere quiet or get permission.

TikTok also says you need at least one public post before analytics appear.

Is TikTok right for my business?

TikTok is a video-first network. It suits businesses where watching the work is interesting: food being made, a room transformed, a quick fix explained, a behind-the-scenes look. It works best if someone on the team is comfortable on camera and can film short clips most weeks.

If that sounds like a chore, start somewhere else. Skipping TikTok costs you little; a TikTok that eats hours you don’t have costs a lot. Our platform guide helps you choose, and the video hub explains how to make short-form video that works on TikTok, Reels and Shorts at once.

What are the common mistakes and edge cases?

  • Trending songs on a business account. They aren’t available to you for a reason. Use the Commercial Music Library or your own sound.
  • Verifying under a different name. Your documents need to match the business you’re promoting.
  • A staff member’s personal account. If it’s the business’s main presence, it should be a business account owned by the business.
  • Posting only ads. Videos that feel like ads tend to be skipped. Show the work and the people.

What if this didn’t work?

  • You don’t see Business verification. Update the app and check under Settings and privacy, then Account.
  • Your business account turned into a General account. TikTok says this can happen if you don’t verify. Look for the verification prompt on your profile, tap Verify and submit your documents.
  • Analytics are empty. Post at least one public video.

How much does it cost, and how long does it take?

The account is free. Verification may take up to 5 business days. Making videos is the real time cost: plan on filming a batch at once, using a content calendar.
