Can I measure my website with fewer cookies?
Yes. You can tighten Google Analytics 4 by shortening data retention, shortening cookie lifetimes and using consent mode, or switch to a privacy-focused tool that counts visits without cookies. Each choice trades some detail for less tracking. Count your leads either way, because that's the number that matters most. This isn't legal advice.
The short version
- Decide what you actually need to know: usually visits, where they came from, top pages and leads.
- If you keep Google Analytics 4, shorten data retention, consider a shorter cookie lifetime, and use consent mode.
- Cookieless tools count visits without storing an ID on the visitor’s device. They give simpler reports.
- Session recording tools like Microsoft Clarity collect more, not less. Use them deliberately.
- Fewer cookies can mean fewer consent questions, but not always none. Check with your adviser.
This isn’t legal advice.
What are my options?
| Option | What it keeps | What you give up |
|---|---|---|
| GA4 with tighter settings | Full GA4 reports. Google Ads links. | Still sets cookies. Needs consent in the EU, often the UK. |
| GA4 with consent mode | Modeled data for people who decline | Some data is estimated, not counted |
| A cookieless analytics tool | Visits, sources, pages, simple goals | Less detail on returning visitors and long journeys |
| Server or host statistics | Raw page requests | Bots mixed in; little detail on sources |
| No analytics, just lead counts | What matters most | Can’t tell which pages work |
How do I tighten Google Analytics 4?
1. Shorten data retention
Google’s data retention page says user-level data can be kept for 2 or 14 months on standard properties. It also says the setting “does not affect standard aggregated reports”; it only affects explorations and funnel reports. You need the Editor role to change it. Open Admin, then the property’s Data retention setting under its data settings. Choose a period under Event data retention and select Save.
2. Shorten the cookie lifetime
GA4 sets two cookies, _ga and _ga_<container-id>, each lasting 2 years by default, per Google’s cookie usage page. Admins can change the expiry in the data stream’s Google tag settings, from immediately up to 25 months. Browsers may cut it shorter anyway. Google notes that when a visitor doesn’t return, Chrome caps these cookies at 400 days and Safari at 7 days.
3. Know what GA4 does with IP addresses
Google’s IP masking page says that in GA4 “IP masking is not necessary since IP addresses are not logged or stored.” Older guides that tell you to turn on IP anonymization were written for Universal Analytics.
4. Use consent mode
Consent mode stops GA4 setting cookies for people who decline. Google’s Analytics consent page explains that with an advanced setup, cookieless pings let Google model the missing data.
What about cookieless analytics tools?
Several privacy-focused tools count visits without a cookie. For example, Plausible’s data policy says it doesn’t use cookies or persistent identifiers. It counts unique visitors with a daily hash that’s rotated and deleted every 24 hours, and it doesn’t store raw IP addresses. Cloudflare describes its free Web Analytics as not collecting or using visitors’ personal data, and it works without moving your site onto Cloudflare.
Read each vendor’s own privacy and data pages before choosing, and check where they store data. “Cookieless” doesn’t automatically mean “no consent needed” everywhere, because European rules also cover other ways of reading a device. In the UK, the ICO’s statistical purposes exception covers analytics used only to improve your site. You must explain it and let people object. Any outside provider must act only for you.
Where do session recording tools fit?
Tools like Microsoft Clarity record clicks, scrolls and sessions. They’re useful for spotting a broken form or a confusing page, but they collect more than a visit counter. Microsoft’s consent mode page says that, starting October 31, 2025, Clarity enforces consent signals for visits from the EEA, UK and Switzerland. Our free tools hub covers what Microsoft Clarity shows and its limits.
Why does it matter?
Every tracker is another company handling your visitors’ data, another line in your privacy policy and possibly another consent question. Most small businesses use a fraction of what GA4 collects. Collecting less makes your policy simpler and your banner shorter.
What are the common mistakes?
- Running two or three analytics tools that nobody checks.
- Leaving 14-month retention on when nobody uses explorations.
- Assuming a cookieless tool needs no mention in your privacy policy. It still processes visit data.
- Turning on session recording everywhere, including pages with forms, without checking what it captures.
- Losing lead tracking when switching tools. Set up form and call goals again.
What if the numbers look lower after changes?
That’s normal when people decline cookies or you switch tools. Compare trends, not totals, and keep counting leads directly. Our forms and leads hub explains how to measure which pages produce leads.
How much does it cost, and how long does it take?
GA4 and its settings are free; changing retention and cookie lifetime takes minutes. Cloudflare Web Analytics is free. Other cookieless tools are often paid subscriptions, so check current pricing on their sites.
How does E-3 handle this?
As part of website care, we can review which analytics and recording tools run on your site and remove duplicates. We can tighten GA4 settings and make sure lead tracking still works. You decide which changes to make.
