What is breadcrumb markup, and does a small site need it?

Breadcrumb markup labels a page's place in your site, such as Home, then Services, then Website care. Google can show that trail in desktop results instead of the raw web address; since January 2025 it no longer shows on mobile. It needs at least two items. Most SEO plugins add it automatically, so check before adding more.

The short version

  • A breadcrumb trail shows the path to a page: Home, Services, Website care.
  • BreadcrumbList markup labels that trail for search engines.
  • Google needs at least two items, each with a name and position.
  • Since January 2025, Google shows breadcrumbs in desktop results only.
  • Most SEO plugins and many themes add it for you.

How do I add breadcrumb markup?

  1. Check what you have. Paste an inner page’s address into the Rich Results Test. If it shows “Breadcrumbs,” you’re done; just confirm there are no errors.
  2. Show breadcrumbs on the page. A visible trail near the top of inner pages helps visitors, and Google’s general guidelines ask that markup reflect what’s on the page.
  3. Turn on the plugin option if your SEO plugin offers breadcrumbs. See adding schema in WordPress.
  4. Or add it by hand. Google’s breadcrumb guide says a BreadcrumbList needs at least two ListItems. Each item has a position (1 for the start), a name, and an item with the page’s address. The last item may leave out item, and Google then uses the page’s own address.
  5. Test again after publishing.

A short example for a service page on E-3 Design’s site:

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "BreadcrumbList",
  "itemListElement": [
    { "@type": "ListItem", "position": 1, "name": "Home", "item": "https://e-3design.com/" },
    { "@type": "ListItem", "position": 2, "name": "Services", "item": "https://e-3design.com/services/" },
    { "@type": "ListItem", "position": 3, "name": "Website care" }
  ]
}

The trail should follow how a visitor would naturally get to the page, not necessarily the folders in its web address. Google’s guide says the trail “indicates the page’s position in the site hierarchy.”

What changed in 2025?

Google’s documentation updates record that on January 22, 2025, Google updated the breadcrumb guide to say breadcrumbs appear only in desktop results, not mobile, because they get cut off on small screens. The current guide says the feature “is available on desktop in all regions and languages where Google Search is available.”

Why bother on a small site?

On desktop, a clean trail like “e-3design.com > Services > Website care” tells a searcher more than a long address. It also gives search engines a simple map of how your pages relate. And for visitors, a visible trail is an easy way back up a level.

Breadcrumbs also make a site’s structure obvious to you. If you can’t decide what a page’s trail should be, that’s often a sign the menu or page grouping needs a rethink. On a five-page site, breadcrumbs add little. On a site with service, location or product sections, they’re worth having. Since plugins usually add them for free, the effort is small either way.

What are the common mistakes?

  • Markup with only one item. Google needs at least two.
  • A trail in the markup that isn’t on the page, or that differs from the visible one.
  • Two sets of breadcrumb markup, one from the theme and one from a plugin, with different paths.
  • Expecting breadcrumbs on mobile results. They no longer show there.
  • Using the trail to stuff keywords, such as “Best Plumber Somerset PA” as a crumb name. Use your real page names.

What if breadcrumbs don’t show in results?

Check that the Rich Results Test finds them without errors, and that you’re looking at a desktop search. Google decides when to show the trail, and valid markup doesn’t guarantee it. Search Console’s Breadcrumbs report, under Enhancements, lists problems across your site. See how to test your schema.

How much does it cost, and how long does it take?

The markup and Google’s testing tools are free; a premium plugin may cost money. With a plugin, a few minutes to switch on and test. By hand, the markup belongs in your page template, so it’s set once for all pages.

How does E-3 handle this?

On E-3’s own site, breadcrumb markup comes from the page template, so it always matches the trail visitors see. On client sites, breadcrumb markup is part of our SEO and AI search service, and template changes are made on a staging copy first.
