What is local SEO?
Local SEO is the work that helps nearby customers find you when they search for what you do, like "roofer near me" or "dentist in Somerset". It covers your Google Business Profile, reviews, matching business details across the web, and a website that clearly says what you do and where. No one can buy a better local ranking.
The short version
- Local SEO is about showing up when people near you search for your service.
- It has five parts: your Google profile, reviews, consistent details, a clear website and local mentions.
- Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. You can’t change distance.
- Start with your profile and your details, then build a steady review habit.
- Nobody can pay Google for a better local spot.
How does local SEO work?
Search for a service with a town name, or “near me”, and Google usually shows a map with a few businesses before the regular results. Local SEO is the effort to earn a place in both.
Google’s local ranking page names three factors:
| Factor | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Relevance | How well you match the search | Pick the right category, describe every service |
| Distance | How far you are from the searcher | Nothing; set your service area honestly |
| Prominence | How well known you are | Reviews, links from other sites, a good website |
Those factors play out across five pieces of work:
- Your Google Business Profile. Complete, accurate and kept current. Our Google Business Profile guide walks through every section.
- Reviews. A steady flow of genuine reviews, with replies. Google says more reviews and positive ratings can help local ranking.
- Matching details. The same name, address and phone everywhere you’re listed. See why your details need to match.
- Your website. A page for each main service, your towns named plainly, and contact details on every page.
- Local mentions. Your chamber of commerce, local sponsorships, trade groups and news. Google counts links from other sites toward prominence.
The profile is only one part. Our guide on how your profile, website and ranking connect goes deeper on the Google side.
Why does local SEO matter?
When someone searches “plumber near me,” they usually want to call today. The businesses in that map are the ones who get the call. A good website that never appears there is easy to miss.
What mistakes hold businesses back?
- A half-filled profile. Wrong category, missing services, old hours.
- Keyword stuffing the business name. Adding “Best Plumber Dayton” to your name breaks Google’s rules.
- Copy-and-paste town pages. Google treats near-identical city pages as doorway pages. See whether to make a page for every town.
- Asking for reviews only now and then. A burst, then silence.
- Old listings nobody owns. A previous address or phone number still floating around.
What if I’ve done all this and still don’t show up?
Check the basics first. Is your profile verified? Is your main category the one people actually search for? Search from a phone near your business, not from your office computer. Then look at your website: is it indexed at all? See why a site doesn’t show up on Google.
Sometimes the honest answer is distance. A business across town may simply be closer to the searcher.
How much does it cost, and how long does it take?
A Google Business Profile is free. Setting up the basics takes a few hours. Reviews and local mentions build over months. See how long SEO takes.
