Local pack

The map and short list of local businesses that Google shows near the top of results for searches like 'dentist near me' or 'plumber in Somerset'.

Also called Map pack, Local 3-pack, Google Maps results

The local pack is the block of map results Google shows for searches with local intent, such as “coffee shop near me” or “roofer Dayton OH”. It usually shows a map and a few businesses, each with their rating, reviews, hours and buttons to call, get directions or visit the website. It often appears above the regular website results.

The businesses in the local pack come from Google Business Profiles, not directly from websites.

Why it matters to a small business

For local services, the local pack is often the first thing a customer sees. Many people call or get directions straight from it without visiting a website.

Google says local results are based mainly on three things, in its tips to improve local ranking:

  • Relevance: how well your profile matches the search.
  • Distance: how far you are from the searcher or the location in the search.
  • Prominence: how well known your business is, including reviews, links and your overall web presence.

You can’t change distance, but you can work on the other two: a complete, accurate profile, the right categories, steady reviews, consistent business details, and a website with clear service pages.

Example

A family-run HVAC company has a half-finished Google profile with few reviews. They complete every section, choose accurate categories, add real photos and start asking each customer for a review. Over the following months, they appear in the local pack for more searches in their area.
