How do I add, remove or require fields at checkout?

In WooCommerce's Checkout block, open the Checkout page in the editor, select Checkout Fields in List View, and use Address Fields in the sidebar to show or hide Company, Address line 2 and Phone, and make each Optional or Required. Save, then place a test order. Brand-new fields need an extension or a developer.

How do I change the checkout fields?

  1. Open the Checkout page (these steps are for stores using WooCommerce’s Checkout block). With a block theme, go to Appearance, then Editor, then Pages, and open Checkout. With other themes, go to Pages, then All Pages, and edit Checkout.
  2. Select the fields. Open List View, expand Checkout, then select Checkout Fields.
  3. Show or hide fields. In the sidebar, under Address Fields, turn Company, Address line 2 and Phone on or off.
  4. Optional or required. For each one that’s showing, choose Optional or Required.
  5. Save the page.
  6. Test it. Open your shop in a private window and go through checkout as a customer.
    • Expected result: the fields show the way you set them, and a required field can’t be left blank.

The billing and shipping address sections share these settings, so one change covers both. These steps follow WooCommerce’s Checkout block guide.

The short version

  • Built-in choices: Company, Address line 2 and Phone can each be shown or hidden, and set to Optional or Required.
  • Anything else, like a new question, needs an extension or a developer. Test with a real order after any change.

What other checkout settings are there?

  • Terms checkbox: in the Terms and Conditions block, turn on Require Checkbox so customers must agree before ordering.
  • Return to Cart link: the Actions block has Show a Return to Cart link.

How do I add a field that isn’t there?

WooCommerce’s built-in settings don’t add new fields, like a gift message or “how did you hear about us.” That needs an extension or custom code. WooCommerce notes that extensions which add checkout fields may need extra work to run with the Checkout block, as its cart and checkout guide explains. Check that any extension says it supports the Checkout block before you buy it.

What if my checkout doesn’t look like this?

Older stores may use the classic checkout (a shortcode), which has no field settings in the editor. Changing fields there needs a plugin or code. To see which you have, open the Checkout page in the editor and look in List View: a Checkout block means the steps above apply; a Classic Shortcode block means classic.

What are the common mistakes?

  • Requiring too much. Ask only for what you need to fill the order. A long form is more work for every customer.
  • Hiding the phone when the courier needs it. Check what your shipping service asks for.
  • Not testing. Always place a test order after a change. See why checkout isn’t working if it fails.
