Conversion

When a website visitor takes an action that matters to your business, such as calling, filling in a contact form, booking or buying.

Also called Key event, Conversion rate, Lead

A conversion is when a visitor does something you want them to do on your website: call, submit a contact form, request a quote, book an appointment, sign up for a newsletter or make a purchase. It’s the moment a visitor becomes a lead or a customer.

Conversion rate is the share of visitors who convert. For example, if 1,000 people visit and 20 submit a form, the conversion rate is 2 percent.

In GA4, conversions are tracked as key events.

Why it matters to a small business

Traffic alone doesn’t pay the bills. A site with fewer visitors but more conversions is doing a better job. Tracking conversions shows which pages, sources and campaigns bring real business, and where people give up.

Common ways to improve conversions:

  • A clear headline that says what you do and where.
  • A tappable phone number and one obvious button on every page.
  • Short, accessible forms. See WCAG.
  • Reviews and real photos near the call to action.
  • Fast pages, especially on phones.
  • Quick follow-up, so leads don’t go cold. Tools like missed-call text-back and a CRM help.

Example

A cleaning company gets steady traffic but few quote requests. Its form has eleven required fields. Cutting it to name, phone, email and a message, and adding a tappable phone number at the top of each page, increases the number of quote requests from the same traffic.
