Plugin

An add-on that gives a WordPress site extra features, such as contact forms, booking calendars, SEO tools or online stores.

Also called WordPress plugin, Add-on, Extension

A plugin is a piece of software you install on a WordPress site to add a feature. Forms, galleries, booking calendars, SEO settings, security tools, backups and online stores like WooCommerce are all plugins. Thousands are available in the official WordPress plugin directory, and many more are sold by developers.

Other platforms have the same idea under different names, such as apps or extensions.

Why it matters to a small business

Plugins make WordPress flexible: you can add almost anything without custom code. But each one is software written by someone else, and that brings responsibilities:

  • Updates. Plugins are updated to fix bugs and security holes. Outdated plugins are one of the most common ways small sites get hacked, often leading to malware.
  • Compatibility. An update can occasionally conflict with WordPress, your theme or another plugin.
  • Speed. Heavy plugins can slow every page and hurt INP and LCP.
  • Trust. Only install plugins from the official directory or known developers. “Free” copies of paid plugins from unofficial sites are a common source of malware.

Example

A bakery’s site has 34 plugins. A review finds eight are inactive, three do the same job, and two haven’t been updated in years. After testing on a staging site, they remove thirteen. The site is faster and updates are simpler.
